Scandinavian Tobacco Group (STG) is the world’s largest manufacturer of cigars and pipe tobacco.[1] The group employs 8,115 people [2] in, among other countries,[where?] the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Indonesia, Europe, Australia and the United States. The company is headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark, and is owned by the Danish Augustinus and C. W. Obel foundations, and Swedish Match.[citation needed]

History

The company was founded as the Scandinavian Tobacco Company in 1961.

During the reconstruction of 1990, all cigarettes manufacturing was gathered together in the new independent subsidiary company of House of Prince A/S and all Cigars manufacturing was gathered together in Nobel Cigars A/S – now ST Cigar Group Holding B. V.

In July 2008 the cigarette and snus operations of the company were acquired by British American Tobacco. The company retained its cigar, pipe tobacco, rolling tobacco, and tobacco bits businesses.

In December 2008 the decision was made to change the company’s name to Scandinavian Tobacco Group.

On 26 April 2010 it was announced that the parties had signed an agreement to form a new company by combining all the tobacco business of Scandinavian Tobacco Group AB (STG) with the cigars and pipe tobacco business of Swedish Match AB (SM) (with the exception of its US mass market cigars). After having obtained the required approvals from a number of national competition authorities, the transaction has been completed with effect from 1 October 2010.

Products

STG's primary business is production and sales of cigars, pipe tobacco and rolling tobacco.

The Group has more than 200 brands. Its leading cigar brands include Café Crème, La Paz, Henri Wintermans, Colts, Mercator, Macanudo, CAO, Punch (US), Partagas (US) and Cohiba (US). The leading pipe tobacco brands are Erinmore, Borkum Riff, Colts, Captain Black and Clan, while the most important roll-your-own brands include Colts, Salsa, Bugler, Tiedemanns and Escort.

Business

Today, Scandinavian Tobacco Group is the world's largest manufacturer of cigars and pipe tobacco.[3] The Group employs approximately 9,000 people worldwide.[4]

The group sells 3 billion cigars and 5,000 tons of pipe and fine-cut tobacco annually[5] and sells cigars in more than 100 countries, with sales companies in the US, Canada, Australia and most European countries. The group has production facilities in Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, the United States, the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Honduras and Indonesia.

Tobacco production takes place in the factory in Assens, Denmark, at Lane Limited in the United States.[citation needed] Approximately 5,000 tons of tobacco is sold annually in 70 countries.[citation needed]
