Shahapur is a census town in Thane district in the Indian state of Maharashtra. The nearest railway station is Asangaon, which is 85 km from Mumbai CST on the Central railway line. Shahapur is situated around 25 km from Kalyan railway station, 45 km from Thane, and 55 km from Mulund. Shahapur lies on the Mumbai-Agra National Highway - No.3 and is 90 km from Mumbai.
Shahpur in an industrial area also. Jindal steel has a plant here. Other notable firms that have a plat here is Liberty Oil.
Shahapur is also a Taluka place and areawise Shahapur is the largest Taluka in Thane District. Most of the dams supplying water to Mumbai are located nearby. Shahapur is also surrounded by the Sahyadris and places like Mahuli and Aaja are hot-spots for trekking. The Maharastra Government has declared Shahapur a Tourism spot.
There are many temples in shahapur like Manas Mandir, Sikh Gurudawara (near Asangaon).
Geography
Shahapur is located at 19°27′N 73°20′E / 19.45°N 73.33°E.[1] It has an average elevation of 46 metres (150 feet).
The total water supply to mumbai city is 3000 MLD per day. The four dams, namely, Tansa, Bhatsa, Vaitarna and Modak Sagar, alone caters 2900 MLD per day. The 100 MLD are supplied by two lakes located around Borivali, Tulsi and Vihar. Since Shahapur supplies almost the entire drinking water to Mumbai, the government of Maharashtra has declared this town a No Chemical Zone. Shahapur has an average literacy rate of 87%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 89%, and female literacy is 84%. In Shahapur, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Shahapur is town on mumbai agra highway, being taluka place and good connectivity to mumbai. Its growing fast. Construction boom is clearly seen like mumbai suburbs. Infrastructure is crumbling due to major increase in vehicles due to economic boom. Roads in city are full of pathholes. Local transport mainly depends on auto rikshaws, buses and private vehicles. Shahapur is connected to all major cities of maharashtra. Nearest airport is chattarpati shivaji international airport in mumbai.
Recently it has a major boom in industrial sector as it has a major advantage of good transport facility and connectivity. Easily available labour class, educated mass and also linked with mumbai suburbs with Railway [ central railway local trains through Asangaon Station [AN] ]. Only problem with shahapur is its political leadership.All the politicians in shahapur are without far sight and vision.Driving costly cars won't make city beautiful.Middle class,educated peoples,and predominant kunbi people don't have any space in politics.Thats why shahapur is lagging far behind the other towns in developement.Shahapur lacks basic infrastructure.With roads on par with any african towns,it is unable to handle vehicular load.Even the so called small karyakartas own scorpios,xylos,dzires and many more.Educated people usually travel by local trains and auto rikshaws.
How to Reach
To reach Shahapur, you may either take a Maharashtra State Transport bus that leads to Shahapur or take Asangaon or Kasara local train on central route of Mumbai Suburban Railway. To reach Shahapur by road come from the National highway no. 3. One can also reach Shahpur from National Highway No. 4 from Khopoli Haal Phata through Karjat - Murbad State highway or from Chauk - Karjat

They have now started pharmacy and business management colleges and attracting students from nearby towns. Recently Datta meghe engineering college opened in shahapur.its second engineering college in a small city of shahapur making its an important education hub in thane district.
