Chirinuruwowaka[a] (チリヌルヲワカ), is a Japanese rock band formed in 2005 by Yumi Nakashima, known from the band GO!GO!7188.
The band name comes from one sentence of the classical Japanese alphabet “Iroha”, pronounced Chi-ri-nu-ru-wo-wa-ka.
History
[edit]2005: Beginning
[edit]Chirinuruwowaka were formed in 2005 by Yumi Nakashima. After recording her solo album, Ten no Mikaku, released the previous year, Nakashima realized that she wanted her next solo album to be made with a band.[2][3]
She first invited bassist Iwai, whom she was always interested in despite only knowing of him from a recorded performance, to GO!GO!7188’s tour, where she met him for the first time. She formally asked him to join the band. Then Nakashima chose drummer Abe, who had participated in the recording of her solo album. Finally Nakashima auditioned guitarists, and 20-year-old Miyashita was selected. They performed their first concert on June 13, 2005, playing at Club 251 in Shimokitazawa.[4]
Chirinuruwowaka released their debut album, Iroha, on September 28, 2005.[5] The band then embarked on the Jazzminton tour to promote the album.[6] The following year, on April 30, they released their first single, "Shingetsu", on BM Tunes. In addition to the new song, the release also included live recordings from the recent tour.[7]
2007-2009: Hiatus
[edit]Miyashita left Chirinuruwowaka during their hiatus.[8]
2010-Present: Restart
[edit]In September 2010, Chirinuruwowaka resumed activity with new guitarist Natsuki Sakamoto, who joined in January 2010.
In early 2016 it was announced that Sakamoto had left the band.[9] The band decided to carry on as a three piece. In 2019, Abe also left the band, leaving Nakashima and Iwai as the two remaining original members.[10] Daiki Nakahata joined Chirinuruwowaka as a support drummer following Abe's departure, first appearing on the album Sapient, released in 2020.[11]
