Staff Selection Commission (SSC) (Hindi: कर्मचारी चयन आयोग) is an Indian organization to recruit staff for various posts in the various Ministries and Departments of the Government of India and in Subordinate Offices.

This commission is an attached office of the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) which consists of Chairman, two Members and a Secretary-cum-Controller of Examinations.

Currently the commission is in news for its delay of the result and recruitment process.In 2012 it has cancelled the exam paper and conducted the SSC CGL exam again. In 2013 it has again cancelled the SSC CGL examination which was conducted in the year 2014 and the recruitment is yet to be done. In the year 2014, it released the notification for SSC CGL examination 2014 and it was expected to conduct the SSC CGL tier II exam in the month of January 2015 but till now the SSC CGL tier I exam 2014 marks and result has not been declared in January and the SSC CGL tier II exam 2014 has been postponed. It has cancelled the SSC Combined higher secondary level examination (CHSL) for the year 2014 also. SSC aspirants have lost the confidence in SSC recruitment and selection process.

Background

The Estimates Committee in the Parliament recommended the setting up of a Service Selection Commission in its 47th report(1967–68) for conducting examinations for recruitment to lower categories of posts. Later, in the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms, On 4 November 1975 Government of India constituted a Commission called the Subordinate Services Commission. On 26 September 1977, Subordinate Services Commission renamed into Staff Selection Commission.

The functions of the Staff Selection Commission were redefined by the Government of India through Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions in 21 May 1999. Then the new constitution and functions of the Staff Selection Commission came into effect from 1 June 1999.This will conduct many exam in india in 2015.But now a days ssc is facing several controversies .

Functions

To make recruitment to: (i) all non-technical Group “C” posts in the various Ministries/Departments of the Govt. of India and their Attached and Subordinate Offices, except those posts which are specifically exempt from the purview of the Staff Selection Commission. (ii) all defence type examination is also held by staff selection commission.

Office

The Staff Selection Commission has its headquarters at New Delhi. At present, there are seven Regional Offices at Allahabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Chennai, Bangalore and two Sub-Regional Offices at Raipur and Chandigarh. Each Regional Office is headed by a Regional Director and each Sub-Regional office is headed by a Deputy Director.
