Swoboda is a surname of Czech origin. In other, closely related versions and transcriptions, it is popular mainly among West Slavic nations. In Czech language the primary meaning of the word is "freedom", "liberty". As the surname it used to refer to "free men" (to distinguish them from "serfs").[1]

In the old Czech orthography the name was written Swoboda and this spelling is still preserved in the names within the language environment where the letter "w" is common (unlike today's Czech) such as Poland or German countries. The cognate surname in today's Czech orthography is Svoboda; Slovak version is Sloboda.
