Reliable sources

[edit]

@Hooperag:, you've added behindthename.com as a source in the lead. I agree with Neiln that we have to question the reliability of your source. Can you vouch for "Mike Campbell", the person who runs that website? Did you check where he obtains his information from? Your source is not a reliable source for Wikipedia purposes because Mike Campbell openly admits that he alone operates that website. Look at the crucial question of how he obtains his information → sure some of them sound like reasonable secondary sources (e.g. "A Dictionary of Muslim Names" by Salahuddin Ahmed and "Dictionary of Surnames" by Basil Cottle). However, further down the list are "unreliable sources" like "Babynamer.com", "Wikipedia" and "Wiktionary". Do the last two ring any bells? Have a read of WP:CIRCULAR and note why you cannot use a source that gets its information from Wikipedia. My particularly favourite section of the references page for "behindthename.com" is "the thousands of people who have made submissions". How does Mike verify any of this information from ordinary folk? The straight answer is that I doubt he has the time to check the accuracy of every single contribution. So, please calm yourself down Hooperag, and take the time to find some genuinely reliable sources. Thank you. Green Giant supports NonFreeWiki (talk) 16:55, 29 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure the current source is much better. It resolves to [1]. --NeilN talk to me 23:32, 29 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
