Article does not do justice to the great rivalry between Secretariat and Sham

[edit]

This is a great page on a wonderful horse. The only thing that bothered me about it was this statement: "His trainer, Laz Barrera, once said: "Affirmed is greater than Secretariat, or any Triple Crown winner, because only Affirmed had to face Alydar." Affirmed and Alydar had a great rivalry and were very closely matched. Barrera may have made the statement but it does not do justice to the great rivalry between Secretariat and Sham. Going into the Kentucky Derby, Sham had already beaten Secretariat in the Santa Anita Derby and was considered the favorite to win the Kentucky Derby. Sham ran the Kentucky Derby very quickly (even though he busted some teeth out on the starting gate), faster than Affirmed and Alydar (probably the second fastest Derby time ever). Sham also ran a very close second in the Preakness but had a disappointing Belmont Stakes run. Sham suffered an fracture after the Belmont Stakes and never raced again. Regarding the above claim about Sham defeating Secretariat in the Santa Anita Derby, in fact Secretariat never raced at Santa Anita Park. Sham did outfinish Secretariat in the Wood Memorial, running second to Angle Light with Secretariat finishing third.
