Proper form

[edit]

User:Bkonrad, stop reverting with a boilerplate edit summary. Explain your reasons. Ars is a a word, which several entries derive from. Please explain what's "proper" by having a disambiguation page refer "also" to entries, without first having one main entry. CapnZapp (talk) 09:57, 13 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It fails on two points. It is a non-article dictionary entry and even if there were some article with relevant content, it is not the primary topic and should not be listed first. olderwiser 10:12, 13 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Why isn't it the primary topic, User:Bkonrad? And why did you revert to an "it can also mean" without anything before it? CapnZapp (talk) 11:23, 13 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Because it does not satisfy any criteria of WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. The "also" was an error left over from previous editors. I hadn't noticed it. olderwiser 12:27, 13 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

CapnZapp: before continuing the revert war, please read and understand WP:DAB and WP:MOSDAB, and then cite the corresponding policy to tell us what we "definitely" should do. Staszek Lem (talk) 22:44, 13 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Even in the absence of a primary topic, one meaning can still be singled out and described at the top, but only if it is relevant to most of the entries on the dab (as for example at Cringe). That's not the case here: as far as I can see, among the several dozen entries there are none related to the Latin word apart from Ars Electronica (which is a WP:PTM anyway and so doesn't really belong in the dab page to begin with) and maybe possibly Ars (film). Still, the Latin word can be defined (NOTDICT notwistanding), but as a regular entry and not at the top. – Uanfala (talk) 13:17, 14 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, any rule may have an exception and here a foreign word may entered contrary to NOTDICT, but there must be really serious arguments to make an exception to a long-established practice. The purpose of DAB page is navigation and {{wiktionary}} link performs this function in a satisfactory and standard way. Staszek Lem (talk) 03:41, 16 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I've now improved the Wiktionary link, seeing that the previous link, defining ars as the "plural of ar" is profoundly unhelpful. The useful link would be, and is now, to the Latin section of Wiktionary, where ars is defined as art or skill. CapnZapp (talk) 13:35, 14 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
That's a pretty poor improvement. Why point to one language definition without even mentioning the language? Why is one definition more important than any other? Readers looking for dictionary content can find it without too much difficulty without such misguided improvements. olderwiser 13:38, 14 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
the previous link, defining ars as the "plural of ar" is profoundly unhelpful - false reasoning. Just the same logic I may say "the link Ars defining it as Ars, Iran is grossly useless." Staszek Lem (talk) 03:44, 16 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
