The article says that, 'modern historians have been unable to pinpoint the location of Artania.' Surely the answer is obvious: the Arsa mentioned by Ibn Hawqal as the capital of al-Arsaniya is the same 'castellum of Arsa' which became known as Ras and served as the capital of the first Serbian state of Raska/Rascia.

If that is the case, as seems obvious, then it might be better to merge this article with that for Rascia, rather than the more general article for Saqaliba.

Surely the Arabic 'Thā' in 'Arthāniyya' recalls the surprising 'th' of 'Ruthenia' - given the non-writing of vowels most Arabic texts, is this not the same word, and a real pointer to the origins of the word 'Rus'? The initial Alif may merely reflect a Turkic or Finno-Ugric intermediary source: these languages historically have tended to avoid initial continuants, adding a prothetic vowel before an 'l' or 'r', e.g. 'Urum' for Rûm 'Rome', or indeed the well-known Tatar and other Turkic 'Urus' for 'Russian'. Arthaniya = Gharmāniyā

[edit]

Arthaniya (Arabic Arṯāniya) The Term Arthaniya means Aar = Eagle + -tana, -tania = Land together "Land of Eagel" a sysonym for liberty, "Saka liba", the correct verion is "Aartania" The people of Aartania came from germany A arabic traveller Al-Chwarizmi (Ṣūrat al-arḍ, 9. Jahrhundert) calls the Kiever Rus "Gharmāniyā, Land of Sakā liba" in german "Germania - Land der freien Saksa" (engl. germany - country of free saxons) A map from 13th century calls the peoples: lat. Scirhan (Skires), and Scito-Tauri in Kiev (Kubala) - Skythen, but not in Skythia.

So, Arabs were trading with Norse Slaves, because Rus were Norse. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.165.113.136 (talk) 14:26, 13 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

no one trades with slaves. they just take from them what they want. that's the proof slav or scoloti and venethi were not slaves. that vulgar french language called english has many more corrupted words other than slav-slave. norse also doesn't mean anything other than geographical therm. north. varyags were ugro-finnic or ukro-finnic. also another geographical therm. ukro (ukrainians) and finnic (from finland - end land).46.217.87.147 (talk) 11:18, 3 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
