A lot of additional information and references lost because of editing by Tinton. I don't have time to redo it now. What a waste of time. SteveH (talk) 05:39, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Unattributed personal recollection[edit]

On a personal note, I knew him when he shared a hospital ward with my father, towards the end of his life. I remember him [I was a schoolboy then] as emanating a wonderful kindness. My dad was busy with other visitors, so I wandered the ward in my annoying fashion, and to my surprise was welcomed by him. He wore a green eye shade against the low sun, and I remember him as clearly now as over 40 years ago, a quiet and gentle soul with his 'Ho Chi Minh' beard. We had several long talks, and he let me have a copy of his autobiography, which amazed me as did my other researches that showed his links to the greats of the South African freedom struggle including Nelson Mandela, Trevor Huddleston, Archbishop Desmond Tutu. I will always treasure my recollection of that quiet time at the end of the 1960s and his caring soft soul, the soul of a Saint.
