Railway

Ashbourne railway did not close in the early 1950s. User_talk:202.171.162.161

Indeed; http://www.derbyshire-peakdistrict.co.uk/tissingtontrail.htm reckons it was closed in the 1960s. Sounds more plausible, as that was the time of the Beeching axe. --VinceBowdren 12:54, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well I'll ask the family (who still live up that way) but certainly the Tissington bit shut long before the CHPR (that was shortly after 1965 IIRC, when I had just started college) Bob aka Linuxlad 14:44, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Also just noted that the Tissington Trail article (Demise section) states that "The rest of the line was fully closed in spring 1967". I have therefore corrected the article. Cowplopmorris 13:44, 31 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't buy '67 as the Ashbourne-Parsley Hay closure date - I remember that the metals were lifted from the section you can see at Newhaven long before that date! I've found very little information in the literature. However there are a couple of pages in Chris Banks' Nottingham and Derbyshire (British Railways Past and Present)
Buxton- Parsley Hay opened 1894, to Ashbourne 1899 (Didn't it then go on to Uttoxeter?)
"The line closed to passenger traffic in 1954 but continued to be used by excursion traffic to Buxton (presumably from Ashbourne but it doesnt say) Closed completely in 1963, but the connection to the C&HPR remained in use until 1967."
There is a 1957 photo of an excursion special "to Buxton from the Midlands" standing at Alsop-en-le-Dale station. --Chevin 09:54, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have found confirmation among the C&HPR stuff in Clive Hardy's Derbyshire Railways: Passenger services finished in 1954, the line continued until 1964, (slight difference here) the station finally closing in 1965.


Ichecked out the Ashbourne-Uttoxeter link with the Churnet Vally guy, over a year ago IIRC - has someone been playing with the date. Linuxlad 19:49, 2 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, what date? I think it may be misleading to write "it closed to regular traffic" as goods traffic continued. Perhaps "scheduled passenger services ended"? Chevin 19:36, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I posted the 1852 date for the opening of the link to Rocester/Uttoxeter, on a 30th March 2005 edit, on the basis of info from David Moore. Yes it seems early, but it's his patch (or was). Bob aka Linuxlad 20:43, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry again, confusion here on my part. I didn't cotton on to the fact that the date you were talking about was the opening of the Rocester section. I was still looking at the closure of the Ashbourne section. I've added the word "passenger" since goods traffic continued. Chevin 09:59, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The date 1852 for the Rocester section is also given by Noel Walley in the North Staffordshire Railway article.

My old Peak Park leaflet, dated 1973, on TT & CHPR, says:- Of CHPR 'Final stretch from Friden to Parsley Hay remained open until 1967' Of TT 'Regular passenger services ceased in November 1954, but excursions continued until October 1963 when the line was closed from Ashbourne to Hartington.
