Should the table of episodes include a link to the individual podcasts? StevenBlack (talk) 17:12, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There's nothing in the guidelines on external links to say not, but (in my opinion) it's probably not necessary to add the maintenance cost— a single link to the main website at the end of the article should be sufficient. ~ VeledanT 22:42, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed, it also clutters the page imho. Hagge (talk) 05:24, 5 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please refrain from speedying

[edit]

One or more attempts to create this article by Astronomy Cast listeners have been speedied—I guess for lack of notability (there is a thread in the Astronomy Cast forum). Astronomy Cast is non-profit and is currently iTunes #1 Natural Sciences podcast across all topics, and I reckon we can make a case for notability / retention even if a little more time is needed to establish references in the article. So if this article is tagged for deletion in the near future, please let it go through AFD rather than speedy. Many thanks, ~ VeledanT 19:04, 5 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have changed most of the already existing references to Astronomy Cast on wikipedia to interwiki links, to help show notability. I just need help with Sun, Saturn, Mercury (planet) and Uranus --85.225.85.96 (talk) 19:33, 5 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki editors really needs to get their heads around this podcasting thing. Skeptics Guide had like 30,000 listeners but they kept deleting it claiming it wasn't notable. Golly. Doesn't matter if a podcast is in the top 10 on itunes by category. As long as there doesn't appear to be a New York Times article about it, it is not notable enough. They only let SGU remain when Randi joined. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mindme (talkcontribs) 02:54, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

List of episodes

[edit]

I moved the list of episodes to a seperate page as I felt the huge table cluttered things up... Sorry the text entry in 'Episodes' is a bit lame but it's late here and I have work in the morning... Maybe someone could put something better ;) Violentbob (talk) 22:27, 6 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've further refined this and split the table into three as it was already starting to get unwieldy at 92 entries. At some point in the future I'm going to look at tidying the whole thing up as I do feel that long tables don't look good ;) Maybe something like this Template:PTR_2008, which I created for a race series I'm involved with. It'll mean creating a page for each episode so lots of work will be needed. The original page of Astronomy Cast episodes is now hanging orphan and I guess it could do with being deleted Violentbob (talk) 11:25, 11 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

List of episodes - a note of caution

[edit]

Umm...be careful there - creating a 'page for each article' will possibly be contentious - there's always been something of a debate about whether individual episodes of a tv/radio/whatever programme deserve their own page, and this seems to vary depending on how popular a show is, but more often on how much fuss is made about it.

For example, 'Lost' and the current (most recent) version of 'Battlestar Galactica' do have a page per episode (then again, they've also got their own Wikiprojects !), but 'Malcolm in the Middle' only has a summary (see List of Malcolm in the Middle episodes), and the 1970's 'The Incredible Hulk' series has no episode summaries at all.

Now, I'll admit that the examples I gave may not be the most suitable - the main bugbear is satisfying WP:N - i.e. there (technically) has to be some 'real world' notability for an episode to deserve its own article page and, as you can probably appreciate, it's often difficult to establish notability for a fictional series! Astronomy, being a 'hard' science should therefore be easy to justify, I hear you cry....well..not necessarily - even looking at the seminal 'Cosmos' television series by Carl Sagan, that only has a brief summary list of the episode contents within the main article itself, and the TV series 'The Universe' only gets Episode list of The Universe (TV series).

So....if you create a page per episode, you may manage to sneak them in 'under the radar' so to speak, but on the other hand, you MAY get editors removing the links - I've seen it happen before - and the arguments/wars/bans and bad feeling that results from it. So, as a friendly note of caution, make sure you've read and understood WP:N, WP:PODCAST and WP:WEB before proceeding :-) CultureDrone (talk) 07:19, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

List of Episodes

[edit]

How about some discussion before altering the list of episodes? That single list is definately too unwieldy; imagine how it will look by the end of the year. Far better to break it up and have at least one page per year, then at least you're not dealing with stupidly sized tables... Violentbob (talk) 19:24, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Merging the lists of episodes

[edit]

I personally feel they should not be merged back into the main article. Doing so will result in a very long page, mainly made up of lists with users having to scroll down the whole lot to get to external refences etc. at the bottom. Plus it just looks *bad*. Far better to have one page per year for the episode lists, and keep the main page clutter free and full of information about the podcast itself. Violentbob (talk) 18:23, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
