Not a Linguists from Latvia[edit]

He does not belong in Linguists from Latvia. There was no Latvia in the 19th-century. It was split between the Duchy of Courland and the Governorate of Livonia in the Russian Empire. Other Latvians moved elsewhere in the Empire. It makes no sense to try to impose a Latvia where there was not one.John Pack Lambert (talk) 04:08, 1 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

He studied at the University of Dorpat, now Turku. This was an institution in the part of Livonia that is now in Estonia, not even now Latvia. So he was not even always resident in what is now Latvia, although how this mattered at the time is not clear because there was no Latvia.John Pack Lambert (talk) 04:10, 1 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
