I have changed the picture title to BTR-80 because of the easily identifiable 90degree muffler. BTR-60/BTR-70/BTR-80 can be easily identified by the angle of their muffler. The BTR-60 has a muffler that comes down at a 45degree angle. The BTR-70 has a muffler that comes down at approximatley 70degrees. The BTR-80 (and BTR-90) have mufflers that are straight accross, or a 90degree angle. There are other, more suble differences like the turret placement and shape, the side infantry door, and weapondry, but the muffler is the simplest and most obvious identifier. Variants
[edit]Note that in recent years, the Russian army has upgraded some BTR-60's and 70's with the diesel engine (and the complete rear hull section!) of the BTR-80 which makes identification a little more difficult. I included those upgrades in the "Variants" list and also mentionned a lot of other variants and upgrades that haven't been covered so far.dendirrek 11:02, 16 November 2007 (UTC) I dont understand what topics hawe this subgect to rf-ucraunian commercial conflict in petrolium-gaz themes???????? Doors
[edit]"The BTR-70 is an eight-wheeled armored personnel carrier originally developed during the late 1970s and fielded by the Warsaw Pact and allies beginning in the early 1980s. Introduced as a successor to the earlier BTR-60, it most closely resembles a BTR-60PB with a longer hull and an improved means of accessing the vehicle with doors on each side of the vehicle replacing the dangerous and unpopular roof hatches of the earlier model."
Improved means of accessing? The doors on the BTR-70 are tiny. The BTR-80 had larger doors for easier access than the BTR-70. Dudtz 10/20/06 10:10 PM ET
- Sounds better than roof hatches: could break your ankle jumping off the stupid carrier. Did the BTR-70 also have a diesel engine, or was that an innovation in the BTR-80? —Michael Z. 2006-10-21 03:28 Z
The BTR-60 has side hatches above the wheels. Dudtz 10/21/06 5:11 PM EST
