314 or 316[edit]

Urselius, the year 314 is not accepted anymore. The best reference on this is Tim Barnes's 'Lactantius and Constantine', which was published (1973) two years after McMullen's Constantine (1971). McMullen is one of the authorities whom Barnes cites as being uninformed of the re-dating of the battle. The date 8 October 314 comes solely from the unreliable fasti of Hydatius, whereas 316 is supported by the remaining literary and numismatic evidence.
