Arbitrary section title

"I said John Kerry's a hero. But what I will always quarrel about are the Purple Hearts. I mean, the first one, whether he ought to have a Purple Heart — he got two in one day, I think. And he was out of there in less than four months, because three Purple Hearts and you're out," Mr. Dole told CNN's Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer. "But three Purple Hearts and never bled, that I know of? I mean, they're all superficial wounds," said Mr. Dole of the military decoration for troops wounded in battle. "And as far as I know, he's never spent one day in the hospital. I don't think he draws any disability pay. He doesn't have any disability — and boasting about three Purple Hearts, when you think of some of the people who really got shot up in Vietnam," Mr. Dole said. [1]
I don't really think we should include it in the article, but I'm unsure.--198 23:06, 1 Nov 2004 (UTC)

I don't believe this part actually appeared in the article:

Bob Dole was never president, obviously. Please, Please, someone make the appropriate corrections.

If not for the campaign of Ross Perot, Dole might have received as high as 49.1% of the vote. If not for Perot, Dole might have won, and/or an Elections Scandal like in 2000(U.S. presidential election, 2000) could have occured. I'm deleting it.

Tiny Edit Request1923

I was just reading the section about his WWII experiences and started giggling. The references to him by last name only (Dole) are repeated so many times in such short sequence that it struck me as funny, especially given his tendency to refer to himself in the 3rd person. Anyone have any objections to me performing a very minor edit and change some of those to reflect proper sentence structure and variety of subject references? (eg using "He" instead of "Dole" and using his proper title at the time "Lt. Dole" etc)LactoseIntolerant (talk) 19:49, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

1923

Was he really born in 1923? Wow, he looks great for 84. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.142.130.27 (talk) 01:50, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

Senate

I corrected and added information on his Senate positions-- specificially in the late '70s. Tooptoo 16:36, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

1996 Primary

In the 1996 Presidential Election, Dole received the Republican nomination easily

Are you kidding me? In the months leading up to the primary, Dole may have held his own against Taylors and the Lugars of the campaign, but "Lamar!" was a serious challenge. Buchanan stole Gramm's show in Louisiana, and then won New Hampshire, splitting it with Dole and Alexander. Buchanan not only never endorsed him but held a rally at the start of the convention. Not to mention Forbes was winning primaries as late as Delaware. The length of the primary race was one reason why the campaign was strapped for cash and unable to match Clinton's ad spending in the late spring and summer. I am going to rewrite this whole section. - choster 21:27, 1 Mar 2005 (UTC)

That's pretty inaccurate. The other candidates did not contest Louisiana because it was prior to Louisiana. Dole swept most primaries easily. He entered as the favorite and lived up to it throughout the primaries.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.16.185.42 (talkcontribs) 16:26, 26 August 2006

Things became skewed once they chose San Diego to have the Convention. That was a bad choice, and one that probably cost Dole the election no matter what the primaries showed. Really, that was a terrible move and one the Republicans are still apparently regretting, per the recent Presidential election.--76.212.158.110 (talk) 09:02, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

Speaking in the third person

Could someone explain why Dole is often parodied as referring to himself in the third person? As far as I know, this only stemmed from a campaign speech in which he said, "You're going to see a new Bob Dole out there." But back in the '90s (and even more recently) he was mocked endlessly on Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons and whatnot for this, as though he begins every sentence with "Bob Dole thinks" or "Bob Dole says". --Birdhombre 15:02, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

This is just speculation, but perhaps it was difficult to characterize Dole, as he's not the most charismatic character. Maybe the 3rd person thing was intended to 1. make sure the viewer knew it was him, and 2. be funny, as it's always funny when people repeatedly refer to themselves in the 3rd person. Some candidates say their own name a lot as a way to make their name stick in your head, which hopefully you'll remember when you vote. • SbmeirowTalk02:48, 9 January 2013 (UTC)

On that note, could someone tell me how the term "Vote Bob Dole" came about? Poofyspikes 19:10, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

Date of Divorce

When, in 1972, did Bob Dole divorce his first wife? That needs to be clarified.John Paul Parks (talk) 20:10, 16 April 2014 (UTC)

When did he resign?

The section on the Senate and on Presidential politics contain two different dates for him resigning his Senate seat; June 11th and May 16th. Can anyone correct or explain the discrepancy?---Mr. Nexx July 8, 2005 10:54 (UTC)

-I just checked again, and the infobox lists his term in the Senate as ending on June 11th, and the article says May 16th. Is May when he announced, or is this a discrepancy? ---Mr. Nexx (talk) 00:37, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

--I looked it up myself. He announced it on the 16th of May, to be effective the 11th of June. To make the article clear, and somewhat uncluttered, I kept the date it was effective, and linked to a source. ---Mr. Nexx (talk) 00:45, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

Pets

Does he have any pets? --Fastflam 14:49, 20 July 2005 (UTC)

His wife gave him a Scottish Terrier named "Leader" when Dole was elected Senate Republican Leader. I don't know if Leader is still alive or not. --Rogerd 17:37, July 20, 2005 (UTC)

Why nothing about his military service

Or am i just missing the section about his military service?

need quote page

Quotes "When these political action committees give money, they expect something in return other than good government." -- Bob Dole, 1983 (before he got lots of PAC money)

"What is amazing is how young he looks for how old he is." -- Dole's first wife Phyllis Macey (who, at 71, is a year younger than Bob.)

"The Internet is a good tool to use to get on the Net." - Bob Dole, 1996

"I know there are California oranges and Florida oranges. When I'm in Florida, I like Florida oranges. Today, I think California oranges are the best, of course." -- Bob Dole, in California, 3/25/96

"The only place you see a free market is in the speeches of politicians. People who are not in the Midwest do not understand that this is a socialist country." -- Dwayne Andreas of Archer Daniels Midland, one of Dole's biggest contributors

"Bob Dole is the tax collector for the welfare state." -- Newt Gingrich, 1983.

“Bob waits to see which way the wind is blowing. … There’s always a question: Does he have a vision? You won’t see him creating an agenda.” – Sen. Nancy Kassebaum, R-Kansas (Doles 1980 campaign co-chairman)

Should add a few lines on Watergate

Suprisingly, the article mentions that "While in the Senate he also served as chairman of the Republican National Committee from 1971 until 1973," but stops short of mentioning Dole's involvement in Watergate. While the more careful reader will notice that this was during the height of the Watergate scandal, there should be explicit mention of this fact.

In fact, Dole was a key player in Watergate, according to a Washington Post writeup. Although found to have done nothing illegal, he was a very vocal supporter of Nixon (at first) and critic of The Post. The Post writeup also claims that the stigma of Watergate made Dole's senate re-election campaign in 1974 difficult. The Watergate Scandal had enough of an impact on Dole's life to merit at least a one or two sentence insert.

This article is very "top heavy." It gives much more weight to recent events and does not successfully balance in other major events in Dole's life.

Photo is Disturbing

Im Sorry, but for god sakes, remove that Photo it scares the crap out of me. Can we get a better one? Jack Cox 05:48, 16 August 2005 (UTC)

I don't know, seems to accurately reflect the scariness of this man.

Looks old but... can't resist: "Riiiight, because wikipedia is /supposed/ to take sides on stuff like that."

Character a campaign issue

Conterary to the belief of some people Dole didn't not refuse to make character a campaign issue. The fact is that both Clinton and Dole agreed to refrain from making character a major campaign issue.

Bob Dole did attack Clinton though on the Dick Morris issue, claiming.

"You can take the measure of a man by the company he keeps."

ADA

Is there much here on his work with Harkin on the Americans with Disabilities Act? Harkin's website mentions it.[2]--T. Anthony 08:13, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

And although several of you have deemed him "scary", etc I think he is the Presidential candidates I feel most good about voting for. I knew he would lose so there was no guilt about what he'd do as President, but also I've met him a few times, was at his Senate office once, and he'd helped out some of my relatives. (Hence I'm not going to make any edits for conflict of interest)--T. Anthony 08:16, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

I have objection, that link has nothing to do with the real Bob Dole. Also, someone added in the introduction that "Dole is often satirized in the media for his tendency to speak in the third person" while a few television shows (like Family Guy and SNL) have made jokes of this, it is untrue. Bob Dole did not have a tendency to speak in the third person in real life. User:Burroughsks88 01:41, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
