Anyone opposed to moving the Eastern and Western pipistrelle to tri-colored bat and canyon bat respectively? It seems since theyy were moved out of the Pipistrellus genus that the common names have been changed too. Tristanb (talk) 22:33, 14 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well, "canyon bat" goes back to at least 1939 (JSTOR 1930734). It seems to be used about equally with "western pipistrelle" in recent times (http://scholar.google.com/scholar?start=20&q=Parastrellus&hl=es&as_sdt=0&as_ylo=2007), and I think the situation with Perimyotis and "tricolored bat" is similar (http://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=es&q=Perimyotis&btnG=Buscar&lr=&as_ylo=2007&as_vis=0). With that in mind, I don't have much preference one way or the other for either name; I do think it would be good to use the same kind of name for both "pipistrelles".
