Splitting into various pages

[edit]

Given the existence of citations for each person and them being very different from one another, I think it would be worthwhile to create Kephisodoros (comedian) and Kephisodoros (Athenian leader) and have this page become Kephisodoros (disambiguation). This notably does not create a page for the Kephisodoros at the Battle of Mantineia, but due to there only being one source, I doubt that it is notable enough. This may also be the case for the Athenian leader, with his only mention being in the Description of Greece. The comedian has more sources attached and is mentioned in Dionysia.

I opted to use the ALA-LC guide for romanizing the Greek, while removing the diacritic marks. Bellakine (talk) 23:40, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

There might be some value in a split, but the hypercorrect transliteration is anachronistic and looks bizarre. A simple ngram comparison shows that the traditional transliteration of the name not only remains the most common in recent publications, but is overwhelmingly the most common form in all English works published since 1800, and thus by far the most likely to be known to readers. The same goes for the even more extreme transliteration that another editor opted for in the last stable version of the article: "Krete", "Kynoskephalai"—really? Also, the notability of Greek and Roman figures should not necessarily be tied to the number of sources that discuss them. In all probability several modern sources could be cited, if anyone cared to look for them. But relatively little of what was written in the classical world has come down to us intact, so the scarcity of period sources does not typically reflect the importance of the subject. I think a split is reasonable as well.★Trekker (talk) 20:20, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've removed the split tag because in over a year of discussion there have been only two comments and nobody has actually done anything about splitting. Anyone who thinks that the various Cesiphodoruses are notable is free to create articles on them and turn this into a disambiguation page.
