History
[edit]The Geography section makes the dubious claim that only Grass Lake, Lake Marie and Nippersink Lake are natural (implying that the others are man-made). There is no discussion of how or when the river was impounded to create the other lakes.
I notice the Illinois DNR website for Chain O'Lakes State Park (Illinois) states that Grass, Marie and Nippersink are three natural lakes bordering the park, so maybe this is the origin of the statement, and some other lakes are in fact natural?
I recently encountered an 1872 McHenry County Land Ownership Map (behind paywall on ancestry.com) shows "Pistaka" lake with similar shorelines (but apparently somewhat lower level as the islands are larger). This would suggest that Pistakee is at least that old, which is older than the Stratton Lock and Dam downstream (built 1907). --Theodore Kloba (talk) 18:40, 27 June 2017 (UTC) My guess is that all of the lakes are natural although they may have been smaller and shallower before damming.
