Invented by Britten?[edit]

This is a stretch! The term might have been (this needs citation anyway!), but the form certainly has existed for a long time, maybe even since Greek times and certainly in the Baroque period (it seems dismissive to say "The term chamber opera is also sometimes used to describe smaller Baroque operatic works..."). Chamber opera is simply a portmanteau of chamber ensemble, meaning a small ensemble (or at least one smaller than an orchestra, or an ensemble created for a specific purpose), and opera. I'm sure it existed before Britten. Rarely do composers ever "invent" a form of dramatic art. It's like saying that one composer invented ballet. Please define "single strings"[edit]
