"Columbiana is a suburb..."
[edit]This is one of many reasons why I despise the over-reliance Wikipedians seem to have upon US Census Bureau data. The first section of the History section states that Columbiana is a suburb of Youngstown. Now that may be true enough, but it certainly isn't historically true, which makes it problematic as an opening sentence for the History section. Moreover, it contravenes the statement in the lede that neatly divides Columbiana between the "Youngstown–Warren–Boardman, OH-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area", in which only a small portion of Columbiana lies, and the "East Liverpool–Salem Micropolitan Statistical Area", in which the bulk of Columbiana lies, and in which is the site of the original village. Addressing this quirk of geography would require a nuanced understanding of commuting patterns in Columbiana County, wherein many commuters in the City of Columbiana and other parts of Northern Columbiana County (including Salem) commute to Boardman and Youngstown, while commuters in the southern portion (including East Liverpool) are more likely to travel to places such as Wheeling and Pittsburgh. To try to delineate the city along the county line suggests that the majority of Columbianans commute to some hypothetical central business district in Salem, East Liverpool, or somewhere in between. I'm sure some do, of course, but I highly doubt it's the majority, and as I said, such a scenario would contravene the claim that Columbiana is a suburb of Youngstown.
Anybody want to try to tackle a rephrase? I obviously am not the one to do so concisely, as even the explanation above for why I'd like to see the change is hopelessly long-worded. ;-) -- JeffBillman (talk) 23:53, 6 March 2012 (UTC)
