Huh?

[edit]

I thought compartmentalization was when someone uses different thought processes for different ideas. This is a common way to explain how some scientists can believe in a god without any evidence, but then expect evidence for everything else in life. --72.192.146.68 04:31, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Likewise, I thought it was to do with the way that somehow can split themselves into "two" people internally, such as in the movie Psycho, the way that the guy splits himself into the male and his dead mother. Maybe that's a different term, or maybe it's used in different contexts. — metaprimer (talk) 03:44, 6 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No, it is Dissociation. --Kovani (talk) 13:12, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You're absolutely right. Check Nancy McWilliams's "Psychoanalytic diagnosis: Understanding personality structure in the clinical process" for it.--Kovani (talk) 13:12, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Compartmentalization is Mind Control

[edit]

Would it not be easier to say that compartmentalization is a means for the mind to instinctively control itself through a chain-of-command, yes-sir mentality? I think it is no different than herd mentality. Over all - conspiracy theorists uses it a lot in their defining of how a large scale conspiracy works. compartmentalization is way of mind to find different ways for achieving goals ,in other way know only your own mission. Share nothing . As mind had two mind should be in parallel and interaction between each other away from any kind of disagreeing . Edit Suggestion for Second Paragraph

[edit]

Below from Richard Patterson

This is from a cognitive science, not a psychoanalytic viewpoint

If the following edit suggestion is not addressed within a few weeks Tn2si58c (talk) 17:36, 25 August 2013 (UTC), I am going to make the edit as I suggest below.

SUGGESTED EDIT

In the second paragraph of the original text (25 August, 2013) "Compartmentalization allows these conflicting ideas to co-exist by inhibiting direct or explicit acknowledgement and interaction between separate compartmentalized self states." I think "self states" is too general to the extent of almost meaningless cognitive utility. I prefer to say that what is compartmentalized are "action potentials," which gives it some space to work within cognitive science.

MAKING ARTICLE MORE USEFULLY PRACTICAL

Too high level of abstraction (self states) doesn't allow enough room for the practical work of self awareness or guidance toward self awareness with which well defined cognitive biases climb the explicit awareness ladder. Making tools to work on cognitive biases is our most important social task. I see this as a pragmatic.

MACRO LEVEL VIEWPOINT PROVIDING JUSTIFICATION FOR THE EDIT

The lack of personal insight of individual proneness in cognitive biases causes real trouble in the world that needs correcting, one person at a time, such as cognitive biases that drive failure to act properly in the current climate change and extinction event--the big one that requires all of our attention, insight and effort.

The unconscious impulses where biological evolution dropped us off as culture grew as an organizer for our specie's planet dominance must be addressed, because there are many things we are now destroying we are going to wish we had back. I take this attitude because I choose to regard humans as outside of nature and not inside it. If we fail to take on responsibility, the project of making explicit and conscious the individual impulses that drive the future, momentum in natural positive feedback loops will become uncontrollable and catastrophic.

Gender differences

[edit]

I wonder if there is published research regarding whether the efficacy of compartmentalization varies by sex. If there is, we could add it. 2607:FEA8:1DE0:7B4:45D:CF59:E0D6:3C7A (talk) 01:49, 26 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
