1873 match possibly not a soccer match

There may not be any 'however' about Derby Midland playing a reported game against Wirksworth in 1873 while implying its existence began in 1883. As the teams were reportedly 15 strong on each side in that match, I suspect it was not an 'association' code match (where the laid down team size was eleven) but a rugby football code match (which would have teams of fifteen). This merits further investigation. 1883 may have been the year the club was first known to exist as an association club. A number of football clubs such as London's Clapham Rovers then in existence played both codes.Cloptonson (talk) 12:24, 5 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
