Untitled[edit]

Having used a cycle computer to measure the distance from Hackney to Dunwich in 2005 and 2006 I would suggest the actual distance is approx 115 miles, not 120.

Semi-organized[edit]

What does "semi-organized" mean? Theshibboleth 09:35, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In this context, it means that although there is general agreement for the ride parameters (i.e. the start and end, as well as the half-way point), there is no formal organisation of the start, nor is there any formal recording of the finish. There is no registration of riders, and no support en-route. I don't know who organises the half-way stop, my understanding was that originally it was friends of Patrick Fields (one of the original proponents of the ride) and is now probably seen as a good local fund-raiser for the community hosting it. The last couple of times I did the Dun Run the halfway refreshements were organised by the brother of Darth Stuart Dennison of Bikefix fame. Mr Larrington (talk) 14:05, 23 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Messengers[edit]

The origins of the ride with the bike messengers is a myth. Patrick Field (London School of Cycling) is the originator of the ride. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/ethicallivingblog/2009/jul/07/bike-blog-dunwich-dynamo#comment-4803402 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.186.66.129 (talk) 13:38, 24 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Why is this section (still) not updated? There is a very clear reference from someone who did one of the early organised editions of the DD, here: [1]. I will update the main article now. 2.102.213.210 (talk) 11:03, 22 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I did the first DD in 1993 and it was organized by the Mosquito Bike shop in Essex Road, Islington. I think I found about it by reading a flyer in New Cyclist magazine (now de-funct). It was a properly organized ride with food stops and a cooked vegie breakfast at the end. I don't remember it being anything to do with bike messengers with fixed wheels. My memory is mostly of people on Mountain bikes with massive halogen lights that required massive batteries strapped all along top tubes. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.39.218.46 (talk) 13:20, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I was another 1993 (and 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999....you get the picture) participant. As stated it was organised by Mosquito Bikes. The start times from Eastway Cycle Circuit were 4pm, 8pm,and 12pm. The stops were at Leaden Roding (Essex), Monk's Eleigh (Suffolk) and Earl Soham (Suffolk). The ride ended at Dunwich Heath, on the other side of the road from the Coastguard cottages, with a tremendous breakfast (I remember meat eaters being catered for...) rather over catered by MB but very welcome nonetheless. In succeeding years there were changes to the route - dropping the 20 mile drag along the A1120 was an improvement. There were also changes to the feeding stations, down to two and then one and then the pop-ups which came thick and fast after the first one. Also the start times came down to one as well. I still have my first three brevet cards with a rather lovely woodcut on the front.Spaceifier (talk) 10:41, 10 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
