WP:GNG[edit]

Hi Wikipedians. I've just spent a while sorting out the Earls of Caldon. UK noble titles/houses are notable. From this it follows that brief details of title holder and other information about the house, including lands and other historical detail, can be included where appropriate. This article is clearly one of these. Wikipedia requires biographical articles on individuals to be on notable subjects only. Notability is not conferred by being a title UK noble title holder per se. Of the 7 Earls, 5 appear to be notable for reasons other than simply holding a title. These include being a member of the House of Lords (and therefore, a politician)

In my view, the 2nd Earl (see article) is the best example of a genuinely notable historical figure amongst the Earls of Caldon. Essentially, nobles with individual Wikipedia articles should have notability clearly established in this way: This leads to a useful and interesting article. The First Earl may be equally notable, but it is hard to say because his article is relatively weak. He established the House, but seems to (as far as info at present suggests) have had an fairly upper-middling career in the East India Company. His notability at present rests on his membership of the UK's House of Lords (as elected NI representative). There is no more information about his political career, however, which may well have been modest. Nevertheless, this is the only obvious reason for his article notability at present, so needs filling out. The 7th Earl's notability rests solely upon his present role as the Lord Lieutenant of Armagh. This is arguable as there is no policy on Lord Lieutenantcies. Other Wikipedians may feel that, rather like being a noble alone, this is insufficient to confer notability. After all, it does look like the Lord Lieutenant role in this case largely follows being the present Earl of Caldon. However, the role is not automatic and so I have erred on the side of caution and tidied the article up rather than propose merging with this page. I have proposed (successfully) (see above) the merging of the 6th Earl's page with this one - on the basis of WP:GNG and because it is clearly better to consolidate information on the house and title than spreading it pointlessly around different article where that it not necessary. I have also removed genealogical information from individual articles on the basis of WP:NOTGENEAOLOGY. Finally, I have proposed the deletion (merging) of the article on the 5th Earl on the same basis as the 6th. This is to ensure other corrections may be made to other articles without the same AfD process being repeated each time. Please see my comments at the Talk pages of the individual articles on each Earl. Happy Wikipedia-ing! Emmentalist (talk) 11:23, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
