Applied research is not commissioned research (nor vice versa)
[edit]Having had first-hand experience with basic, applied, academic and commissioned research, I can with high confidence state that this claim is completely inaccurate: "Applied researchers are commissioned by a sponsor and are responsible for addressing the needs presented by their employer.[2]" Sure, it is supported by a citation from 24 years ago, but this is not how educational research is done in practice. There are tons of examples of academic research projects regarding what are clearly applied research, such as developing a digital learning game, and commissioned resarch on surveying the presence of school resources.
