Old Bet, also known as Betty, died in 1816, not 1827. She was shot by a farmer while on tour in Alfred Maine. There is a plaque at the site of the shooting. The farmer was acquitted of charges. Old Bet is believed now to have been an Indian, not African elephant. Sources for this information are files in Somers Historical Society.
