@Aszx5000: Hello, I've reviewed this article as part of the October GA backlog drive. Please see my review below. If you have any questions or concerns regarding my suggestions, or will not be able to implement them in a timely manner, please let me know. Thank you. Kimikel (talk) 01:06, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Kimikel:. Hi there, thanks for the great comments and review. I have made those changes below. One problem is that Rock & Ice merged with Climbing (two of the best RSes in climbing), and all of R&I's archives seem to have been taken down? These are the refs that you could not link to below (or gave 404 error to Climbing's website). I agree that the statement you highlight below is too strong without direct citation so have taken it out. I found replacements for two other R&I refs but I have left two R&I refs in place which hopefully is still okay? thanks again. Aszx5000 (talk) 12:02, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Aszx5000: Per WP:OFFLINE and WP:LR, I will go out and say that it's fair to keep the Rock & Ice articles that got lost in the merger. I've gone through the article, and I feel like I'm ready to close the review. I appreciate your prompt, quality work; thank you and congratulations! Well-written

[edit]
  • Generally, there's a few long quotes in this article that would be better off being rephrased or shortened
  • understand and have been able to implement the helpful suggestions you have made below to do this.
  • "and with Realization and La Rambla" > and alongside Realization and La Rambla
  •  Done
  • "routes—of any type—at" > routes of any type at
  •  Done
  • "It wasn't until" > It was not until
  •  Done
  • "Schubert felt Sharma's 2016 DWS route Alasha was on balance 9a (5.14d), but that Es Pontàs was harder again." > I might just be reading it wrong but I'm not sure what this sentence is trying to say. Is it just saying that he felt that a grade of 9a for Alasha was accurate but Es Pontas was harder?
  •  Done, yes, but have rephrased to improve meaning
  • "the mental side of DWS was important to adjust to." > it was important to adjust to the mental aspect of DWS.
  •  Done
  • "dyno saying: "At first" > dyno, saying: "At first
  •  Done
  • " Rock & Ice said: "The silhouette of Sharma on the underside of the Es Pontàs arch is an indelible image for climbers of the mid-2000s"."> Rock & Ice labelled the photos of Sharma hanging off of Es Pontas an "inedible image for climbers of the mid-2000s".
  •  Done
  • "when DWS pioneer Miquel Riera was asked about the most impressive DWS ascent, he replied: "Have you seen Chris Sharma on Es Pontàs? That should answer your question"" > DWS pioneer called Sharma's ascent of Es Pontas the most impressive DWS ascent.
  •  Done, slightly changed to "the most impressive ascent in DWS"
  • "Sharma said of his ascent: "... definitely a pivotal" > Sharma called his ascent a "pivotal
  •  Done
  • "He also said: "... deep water soloing embodies for me the perfect form of climbing. Take Es Pontàs for instance, it's a route I put up in Mallorca. It's 5.15, but I can solo it. For me, that's as good as it gets"." > He also described DWS as the "perfect form of climbing", citing Es Pontas as an example, as he could solo it although it is a 5.15.
  •  Done, just changed the construction to: He also described DWS as the "the perfect form of climbing", and that free soloing a 5.15 graded route was "as good as it gets"
  • "Sharma's talent for "... the genius to" > Sharma's "genius to
  •  Done
  • "Climbing also noted that the ascent, and increased profile Sharma brought to DWS, as being another example of his influence on the development of the sport of modern rock climbing, saying: "Sharma shaped modern rock climbing. Whatever he thought was cool, we followed. Bouldering. Projecting hard sport routes. Deep water soloing"." > Climbing also noted that the ascent and the increased awareness Sharma brought to DWS were examples of his influence on the development of the sport of modern rock climbing.
  •  Done, just to clarify, I wanted to keep the quote at the end of this sentence as it is often repeated regarding Sharma?

Verifiable

[edit]
  • There's a few citations whose links don't lead to an article. If you can find an archived version of those articles, or an alternate link, that would be best; if not, there's nothing we can do about it.
  • Let me see what I can do here - the issue is Rock & Ice magazine that has merged with Climbing but the links seem to have all gone. One of them, for the legacy section, is painful as it did say a lot about the impact of the climb. Should have archived !?!?

Spot check

[edit]
  1. 20: Link doesn't lead to article
  • This is an important R&I article for the wording/statements I use in the legacy section .... let me see what I can find as an alternative.
  1. 1: This looks like a user-generated site; I don't think it's suitable as a source.
  • theCrag is the biggest database for holding details of climbing routes in the world (like Mountain Project; I only use it for grades but it is very accurate and shows climbers that these articles are written by climbers.
  1. 14: Verified, but remove "Climbing Desk" as author
  •  Done
  1. 21: Verified
  2. 11: Does not lead to article
  •  Done. This was another R&I article but have an alternative so removed it.
  1. 4: 404 error
  •  Done. This was another R&I article but have an alternative so removed it.
  1. 13: Does not lead to article
  • This was another R&I article .... looking for an alternative.

Broad

[edit]
  • Broad in its coverage

Neutral

[edit]
  • "Images of Sharma soloing on the dramatic and overhanging arch above deep blue sea, adorned the covers of most climbing magazines," > this is a bit of a sensational claim; considering the citation doesn't lead to an article, it may need to be removed or given a different citation.
  • Per above, this was a quote from a Rock & Ice article on the climb, but the link is gone now ..... Let me see what I can do.
  •  Done, I have just taken this sentence out as I can't find an archive to that Rock & Ice article and I agree that the statement is too strong without direct citation.
