- Francois Vatel (1631-1671) was one of the first who professionally organized events. There is also a movie about him called "Vatel". Software tools for event planning, Doodle event scheduling
[edit]I think Wikipedia needs more extensive information about software tools used in event planning. This could be a section in the Event planning article or a separate article. Articles on sub-topics such as individual tools would be welcome.
To start filling this gap, I have created an article on Doodle event scheduling, but it has been deleted (see discussion on that on my talk page). Therefore, a broader action would be needed which could generate enough quality stuff at once to be kept in the Wikipedia for further improvement.

- Ajgorhoe, I'm glad you're interested in event planning! This article needs citations from reliable sources, and it sounds like you understand event planning and can help with citing the article. That would be very helpful to Wikipedia readers!
- As far as an article about event planning software tools, most Wikipedia articles about software tools simply become lists of competing software tools -- just like a list you could get on Google. Those articles become spam magnets for every good and bad software program, and Wikipedia is not designed for this purpose. You know yourself that the process of event planning doesn't depend on using software, it depends on understanding all the tasks involved in planning an event. Major events have been planned for centuries before software tools were available, and in many countries, events are well-planned and executed without the use of software. Wikipedia is an international encyclopedia, and not all countries and people have access to software tools.
- If you can expand this article and fully describe event planning, with citations, Wikipedia editors are more likely to support your proposal for including an article on event planning software. --Busy Stubber 02:33, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

Possible Trends Section
[edit]Perhaps it would be of use to create a Trends section which could link to magazine articles from Event Solutions, which tends to publish articles written by members of the event industry on a variety of topics. For example, this article which discusses using LED lighting and using soft goods to alter the look and feel of an ordinary meeting space. I don't know if these sorts of things are acceptable though. This is an honest attempt to make this a better article. I know there are other sources which would also help to fill out a section like this. Eventsolutions (talk) 20:55, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
- As an encyclopedia WP deals with what is or will be, not what could be. Moreover Event Solutions is a commercial website and lacks the independence and authority required by WP's policies. By all means take ideas from this source, develop them as proper encyclopedic contributions and find independent sources for them, but please don't try to use WP as a promotional platform for your magazine! andy (talk) 00:06, 1 November 2008 (UTC)
- Okay, fair enough. I am curious though, what are some acceptable and authorized independent sources for the event planning industry? Are all of the trade publications which cover the industry considered improper? Is it only improper for me to use my own magazine as a source? - You should read WP:VER, particularly the section on sources. IMHO trade publications won't usually come up to the required standard because they don't have a good record for fact-checking and often lack true independence. There could be exceptions - you have to be prepared to be challenged on this. In any case a trends section will almost certainly fail WP:SPECULATION - "All articles about anticipated events must be verifiable, and the subject matter must be of sufficiently wide interest that it would merit an article if the event had already occurred". andy (talk) 23:48, 5 November 2008 (UTC)

Considering a revamp of this article
[edit]This is an important subject and maybe could use a revamp? If people have ideas about how to improve this article, what to add, and so forth, please write something here. Generally when I do a revamp I keep the existing information as much as possible (sometimes moving it around, or copyediting it) but mostly focus on expanding the article with more referenced content, photos, layout and so forth. And I try to get feedback first after I work on a draft, and get views, before swapping it in. If people have thoughts about how to pursue this, please write something here.--Tomwsulcer (talk) 21:23, 16 January 2013 (UTC)
I think a revamp of the article would be very beneficial. I would like to see this page contain things like: The differences in planning small scale (i.e. weddings) vs larger events (i.e. multi-day festivals), an expanded steps section, tools need (tickets, flyers, banners, etc), the role sponsors play in planning, steps to obtain sponsors, role volunteers play, how technology is changing the playing field and mybe the differences between profit and non profit. This is just off the top of my head. I would have to sit down and really think about it to get a mre refined list of sections, but I think a lot of event planners would benefit from this being a more thorough article. --JesseWWallace (talk) 1:39, 5 May 2014
