Student organizations section

[edit]

Does "Student organizations" section of article on Faculty of Political Science and International Relations, Matej Bel University present a neutral POV? 15:53, 18 June 2012 (UTC)

I have tagged this article with a WP:COI tag since the major recent editor seems to have a close relationship with the subject which may make adherence to a neutral point of view difficult. As it stands, the "Student organizations" section reads more like a promotional leaflet than a Wikipedia article. If the major contributor does indeed have a conflict of interest it would be helpful if he/she followed WP:COI guidance SelomITC (talk) 17:50, 9 June 2012 (UTC))[reply]

The "Student organizations" section may contain an excessive amount of intricate detail that may only interest a specific audience. Also the sub-section "Euro-Atlantic Centre" is just duplicated content from the wiki article Euro-Atlantic Centre. Regarding the other sub-sections i have a suspicion they are entirely copied from "primary sources", in this case the Facebook fan pages of the particular clubs. I came here in response to this notice on the Neutral Point of View board. User:SelomITC is correct - WP:NPOV on Wikipedia is maintained in part by making sure that all information posted to Wikipedia can be verified in third-party sources. Also, Wikipedia is not a directory so lists of student organizations are not typically included in articles about universities. Blue Rasberry (talk) 16:15, 18 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Comment - It appears that this article had a large-ish section on "Student Organizataions". It was removed 18 June in this edit. I have not scrutinized the section in detail; but its size did appear a bit out of proportion to the rest of the article. It is appropriate for this article to have a "Student Organization" section .. but it should be reasonably sized, and very objective. If anyone wants to re-insert it, or part of it, they should propose some new text here, and make sure it addresses any neutrality issues described above. --Noleander (talk) 06:42, 24 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The problem was that it was a list of groups which appear to be only referenced to facebook. By all means add them back in if you can find real references for them. Stuartyeates (talk) 09:02, 24 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. I agree with Stuartyeates - that was way too much detail on entirely non-notable student groups that are only tangentially relevant to the article as a whole - and worse still, written in the style of an advert. Add to that, the totally inadequate primary source references in non-WP:RS media and you have something that's not appropriate for Wikipedia. Deleting that section was without doubt the right thing to do. SteveBaker (talk) 13:04, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, maybe there was too much detail. But it is customary for WP articles on colleges to include a short list of important student organizations. Acceptable sources for such lists are often "soft" sources such as the college newsletter or college handbook. WP:FIXTHEPROBLEM suggests that a better course of action is to just remove all the fluff and pare it down to 5 or 10 important items. --Noleander (talk) 16:19, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
