Etymology
[edit]"There are numerous places in England called Farringdon; all meaning fern covered hill." "fern covered hill" would be FearnDuun, out-side Wessex probably FernDuun. In the middle-English period, this woul be slackened to Ferndon, the o_ being slack. By 1600 this would be pronounced something like Fyrnd'n, non-rhotic, this being London. There is no possibility that Londoners could change Fern to Farring, and it highly unlikely that anywhere else Fern became Farn let alone Farring. The derivation from Fern is not feasible. - The article states the name was imported from elsewhere through a surname. MRSC • Talk 05:43, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
- Ah yes. "William and Nicholas de Farindon, whose name is likely to have originated from one of these places, ..." With that "de" in front of the name, it probably isn't English at all. Froggo Zijgeb (talk) 21:23, 2 April 2009 (UTC)
The family name was Farringdon, (Farn'don is simply a clerk's shorthand taken from a spoken reference), because they came from somewhere called that. The convention before the formalisation of surnames was to use the expression 'de' ie 'of' because the court/ legal language used was Norman French. William F acquired the ward and the family succeeded as a notable mercantile and civic dynasty of the City. Because the City wards in the earlier period were personal property (similar to manors) the family name was adopted formally to refer to the ward (which were later divided). This is all recorded in the 'Letter Books' records of the City. 89.168.94.38 (talk) 06:32, 30 August 2009 (UTC) Tony S
Informal use
[edit]"The extent of the area around Farringdon Station which is sometimes referred to as Farringdon cannot be exactly defined; this contemporary usage is most likely a back-formation and its use is similar to that in the Victoria area."
This is worded in such a way as to make it sound somehow exceptional, but in London at least it is very common to locate something based on the nearest station, especially Underground Stations. Very few people are going to be familiar with The City of London's ward boundaries and so using those as location references will not work in practice.
And Farringdon Station at least shares a name with some pre-existing geographical unit. This does not make Victoria a good comparison as it is named after the then Queen of England, and not a place. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.108.89.77 (talk) 21:56, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
