Only World Cup[edit]

As far as I can tell, I think the 5th official was only used in the world cup and nowhere else. Any sources for/against this? LukeSurl t c 08:55, 25 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Traditionally, in an emergency, the fourth official would take over the duties of the referee or an assistant referee if one of them became injured, with the injured official then taking up the fourth official duties (substitutions, control of dugouts, etc.). However, with the introduction of the fifth official in 2006, where allocated they were given the sole reponsibilities of assisting the fourth official and replacing only the assistant referee if one became injured. The fourth official continued to be the referee's replacement if needed. Ref (chew)(do) 14:43, 3 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed merger of assistant officials articles[edit]

Hi. Please discuss the proposed merger of Assistant referee, Fourth official and Fifth official here. Thanks. Ref (chew)(do) 01:51, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
