I can't be scientifically sure but in my experience. The cork never lies! If the cork smells corky I don't need to taste the wine. Also, it is distressing to pay for a premium wine and then not get what you paid for. Recently, I bought a Bottle of Dom Perignon for a special occasion which was decidedly third rate. Unfortunately, I had thrown away the receipt. I tend to stay away from high priced wines just because of this problem. I have drunk many very fine bottles of wine but, especially in a restaurant, I really hate to send a bottle back. Also, another obsevation, once you have tasted a corked wine the taint confuses your taste buds so that it is difficult to evaluate a second bottle, ie. in a restaaurant.
