Manus Island

Wondering if someone can look into the Manus Island issue, which I believe G4S is involved in. I haven't the time.

I have taken the time to look at this. It seems to have been a single death and therefore is probably not worthwhile including. Dormskirk (talk) 21:23, 18 July 2014 (UTC)

Further Improvements

Hi there. As many of you are already aware, this article can be further clarified and improved. There are also a number of factual inaccuracies that should be reviewed and corrected. In the interest of transparency I am declaring that G4S is my client. I hope to work with other editors to ensure that this Wikipedia article is accurate. Please contact me on my Talk Page if you have any questions.

Regarding the 'Israel and Palestine' section and the presence of Desmond Tutu at the group’s AGM this year, Desmond Tutu was not actually present at the event. I would suggest the wording be edited to account for the fact that whilst Desmond Tutu did pen an open letter to the group, he was not actually present at the meeting. I point to widespread media coverage following the event, which does not make any reference to his attendance. http://www.theguardian.com/business/2014/jun/05/g4s-security-guards-violently-remove-protesters-agm, http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/7f87bfa8-ceba-11e2-8e16-00144feab7de.html#axzz35kP5Gznd, http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/business/industries/supportservices/article4110588.ece

I would therefore suggest the following revision:

“In June 2014, there were protests at G4S’ AGM over its involvement with Israeli prisons. Desmond Tutu, among others, penned an open letter to the security firm, calling for it to "end its complicity in Israel's abuse of child prisoners".”

In the interest of balance on the page, as well as adding relevant, independent information to this section, I would also suggest a brief extract from an independent review conducted by human rights experts to be quoted. The following sentence could be added at the end of the section:

“An independent review refuted the claims made and concluded that G4S had "no causal or contributory role in human rights violations".” http://ift.tt/1uLiSkL

Suggestion that Tutu was present now removed. Dormskirk (talk) 23:09, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

Thanks. Any thoughts on including a reference to the independent review? WikiUser8714 (talk) 08:12, 30 June 2014 (UTC)

The article should include the original allegation and either the refutation or subject response -otherwise readers will think its just been ignored. However I would want a better source for this. JRPG (talk) 09:15, 30 June 2014 (UTC)
Fine with me. Do you have a better source? Dormskirk (talk) 23:48, 30 June 2014 (UTC)

I take your point about the original allegation. The section already mentions G4S’ “complicity in Israel's abuse of child prisoners" through the quote from Desmond Tutu. We could therefore reference the conclusion from the independent review by Dr Hugo Slim (http://www.elac.ox.ac.uk/people/Hugo_Slim.html) and Professor Guglielmo Verdirame (http://www.kcl.ac.uk/sspp/departments/warstudies/people/professors/verdirame.aspx) that “there is no case against G4S on the grounds of complicity”. Though some findings of the legal review have been picked up in the media (http://www.theguardian.com/business/2014/jun/04/desmond-tutu-g4s-israeli-prisons-noam-chomsky) the review itself, conducted by these independent experts, is the only source of the findings. This report seems to have been commissioned by G4S so I am not convinced it is really independent. Dormskirk (talk) 21:27, 18 July 2014 (UTC)

You're correct that the report was commissioned by G4S. However, the company had no input into the process, findings or conclusions. The authors, Dr Hugo Slim (www.elac.ox.ac.uk/people/Hugo_Slim.html) and Professor Guglielmo Verdirame (www.kcl.ac.uk/sspp/departments/warstudies/people/professors/verdirame.aspx), are highly respected experts in their fields and are totally independent. Furthermore, The Guardian newspaper, on 4th June 2014, used the report as a source and explicitly stated its independence. http://www.theguardian.com/business/2014/jun/04/desmond-tutu-g4s-israeli-prisons-noam-chomsky WikiUser8714 (talk) 18:22, 7 August 2014 (UTC)

OK. I have quoted from the report making it clear that it was commissioned by G4S. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 19:00, 7 August 2014 (UTC)

Ok. Thanks for your work on this. WikiUser8714 (talk) 17:49, 12 August 2014 (UTC)
