Why?

[edit]

Why do you call it Gilmer, Who is Gilmer,is he the inventer???? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.231.48.128 (talkcontribs) 23:54, 30 March 2007

It seems to be a trade name. Biscuittin (talk) 21:38, 29 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Why does this article exist independently?

[edit]

This should be merged with Timing belt, unequivocally. The terms are completely synonymous. Jelliott4 (talk) 11:48, 10 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No, timing belts have a specific function. If we have an article on toothed belts in general, then it could be merged to that. I agree that the "Gilmer" name seems strangely over-specific here, especially as they're made by several different manufacturers.
The one reference cited here also says that they're steel wire reinforced, which is pretty rare for these belts. I suspect that Gilmer may have been a trademark at one time for these extra-strength steel-reinforced belts, used in a very narrow context, but that the article has spread inaccurately beyond this. Merger Discussion

[edit]

I have just reworked the article, and from my findings, "Gilmer belt" is a trade name/nickname for "toothed belt" no matter how you slice it. Most instances of people calling it by the trade name are from the early days of belt design when there was something unique about a trapezoidal profile, toothed rubber belt. As it stands, a few hobbyist groups still refer to it as a "Gilmer belt" as evidenced by the unsourced edits from 2013, but that doesn't warrant a unique article. I propose a merger with toothed belt, as some of the references here are kind of interesting and could contribute to a history section on the toothed belt page.
