Merge[edit]

I'm proposing merging Gnoming, Travelling Gnome and Travelling gnome prank as they all appear to be variations of the same thing (despite claims to the contrary). The three article also appear to rely on a lot of original research, or even made up stuff. However, combined they may make a half-way acceptable article. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 19:49, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't agree. There is a clear distinction between the portions. If you merge these three; you might as well merge anything that has to do with Gnomes.

Could you explain the differences? Cos I'm not seeing them. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 14:47, 20 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion will be centralized here in the Talk:Gnoming section. Joosterhout (talk) 18:12, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I do not agree either; there is a big difference between all 3 articles. I agree if you would merge them you could better merge all gnome related articles and that’s not accepted. I also can not find the made up stuff you suggested. Can you explain what you are referring? Joosterhout (talk) 18:21, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

All three articles discuss effectively the same thing.
  • From Travelling gnome prank lead: It involves stealing a gnome, taking it on a trip around the world (usually passing it from person to person), and photographing it at famous landmarks, with the photos being returned to the owner.
  • From Travelling Gnome lead: The travelling gnomes are gnomes which travel from person A to B and from B to C etcetera.... All mentioned sites collect photo’s of their travelling gnome on their website.
  • From Gnoming lead: Travel Gnoming involves taking a gnome - either one of your own, or one taken from someone's garden, and taking them on holiday with you.
What makes these significantly different that they merit separate articles? There is maybe a subtle difference with Travelling Gnome, but the article itself isn't clear at all and gives the appearance of being more about websites that would struggle to establish their notability if articles were created on them in their own right. I would be suggest the subject would be a whole lot clearer if merged with Travelling gnome prank. It already quotes the other article's lead in an attempt to explain itself.
Gnoming, on the other hand, appears to be exactly the same thing as Travelling gnome prank, except someone has invented two sub-categories to differentiate;
  • The term "Local gnoming" has 3 hits in google, two of which are this article.
  • The term "Travel Gnoming" has 10, all of which are replications of this article.
This seem like clear made up stuff, or at the very least neologisms. The fact that the article also gives prominent mentions to two "gnomers" suggests to me that the entire article is a vanity piece and the term 'gnoming' is just another word for the Travelling gnome prank.

There is another option open to solving this mess. An overhaul of Travelling Gnome that makes it a whole lot clearer what it is (without telling us what it isn't), and Gnoming becomes a redirect to either Gnome or Travelling gnome prank.

I'm going ahead with my suggested action for the above reasons. Gnoming becomes a redirect to Travelling gnome prank.--Escape Orbit (Talk) 21:44, 27 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
For what it's worth: I also think that it's ridiculous to have three different articles. Sure, the three may be about different things but they're just three aspects of a common theme and the redundancy between the various articles is high. Pichpich (talk) 16:34, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

These are clearly identical topics. Absolute no-brainer to merge them. There are three areas of garden gnome related topics, I would say: garden gnomes as garden decoration, the Garden Gnome Liberation Front (which gained some notable humorous pop culture visibility in the past), and the somewhat more recent travelling gnome phenomena. Have two or three articles for the later certainly doesn't make any sense. Dxco (talk) 20:13, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've now removed Travelling Gnome from the merge request, making do with a tidy of its contents to better explain how it differs from the Travelling gnome prank. It still needs refs though, and probably should be renamed to remove the capital G on Gnome. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 21:40, 11 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I strongly support the merge, what's going on with this? They look identical... --198.96.34.137 (talk) 01:32, 14 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This is one of the most obvious YES,MERGEs I've ever seen. Thmazing (talk) 16:54, 10 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge - It seems there are as many as four or five distinct articles on this activity? Badagnani (talk) 21:41, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
