Previous county?

[edit]

Generally (by which I mean in most sources) thought of as a former part of Lanarkshire, but I have evidence that a small part of Govan was in Renfrewshire. Can anybody elaborate here, and then perhaps in the article? --Jza84 |  Talk  01:50, 12 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

According to this external list, the parish is properly in Lanarkshire (every reference to Govan is there, and none connect it with Renfrewshire). However, I think that the issue has been historically contentious. See the pages before and after this 1890 reference, especially section 6 starting on page 530, which directly addresses your question. Regards, Notuncurious (talk) 00:26, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Also, the top three gazetteers from this this list are probably good references to read and use, as are both the Old and New Statistical Accounts. Regards, Notuncurious (talk) 00:40, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I suspected Govan may have been in Renfrewshire until it joined Glasgow in 1912. Glasgow was associated with Lanarkshire, which I why I thought Govan may have been considered part of Lanarkshire from thereon. I'll put something together though. Thanks again, --Jza84 |  Talk  14:00, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Added a referenced paragraph on the topic, plus a map. It's out-of-sync with the rest of the text, and probably can be shortened so it doesn't have undue prominence. Improvements on this addition would be welcome. Regards, Notuncurious (talk) 22:32, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Govan although now in Glasgow, was still in Lanarkshire before it's annexation to Glasgow in 1912. I believe parts of the Burgh of Renfrew was in "The Govan Parish" and this led to parts of the Govan Parish being listed as Renfrewshire and Lanarkshire. Basicly "Govan Burgh" was in Lanarkshire and "The Govan Parish" spanned the two counties of Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire. (Quigs1969 (talk) 16:00, 28 May 2008 (UTC))[reply]

There's some useful stuff on early Govan on the Glasgow Uni servers.

Hope this helps someone. Angus McLellan (Talk) 01:19, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
