Hodnet School - update needed
[edit]The school is stated with citation to be maintained by Shropshire County Council. This should, post 2009, read Shropshire Council, the unitary authority that absorbed the County Council and constituent district councils, but I am not sure if it's still in local authority hands or open.Cloptonson (talk) 10:48, 31 May 2016 (UTC)

Name
[edit]I don't think the origin of the name here is necessarily correct. After the Norman Conquest this land was granted to one of William's warriors with the Norman French family name originally Odinet, with variant spellings of his name (or descendents?) recorded in England as Hague d'Hougenet, Hague de Houtentot, or Hodo de Hodenet. This is surely the origin of the current village name, with the suggested Celtic origin appearing to be based solely upon the superficial (and not particularly strong) similarity.
