Page move
[edit]We were throwing around the idea of moving this article to Cargo hook or something, and making "Longshoreman's hook" and "Baling hook" sections within. Thoughts? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 09:24, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
- Looking at hooks of current manufacture it is clear there are lots of designs and they are intended for tasks beyond just hay and ship's cargo... If the decision is made to
mergemove, I think it would make sense to use an even more general title than "Cargo hook". (Plus there is a potential conflict/confusion with Cargo hooks... (Why is that article title plural??)) Rather than using one of the current alt names in this article, perhaps Hook (hand tool) or something along those lines would be general enough to encompass all the various hand hooks. --Dfred (talk) 17:45, 17 January 2012 (UTC)- Thanks for your suggestion. Hook (hand tool) looks ok to me. I've moved Cargo hooks to Cargo hook (helicopter), and added a short (easily adaptable) disambiguation to Cargo hook now, so that part shouldn't be a problem. --:bdk: 20:38, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
- Hook (hand tool) looks good to me too. The only other hand-held hooks I see don't really conflict with this plan. Some can even be "see also" items, I guess. As the suggestion has been sitting here without objections since the 17th, I'm going to boldy do the move.
- I'll fix up hook, the dab page.
- I'll fix up Cargo hook, also a dab page. It can probably remain, as there is no primary. But, i'd be happy to see it go to either place with a hatnote. This would result in overall time savings for visitors. Either or. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 00:07, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

The new structure
[edit]It's rough. Sorry folks. I can't think of a synonym for "securing". Not sure about a lede image. First sentence is a dog. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 00:42, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
- Hmm, maybe we can use some pieces of the description I added to the category at Commons (it's intended as a "catch-all" category). --:bdk: 02:50, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
- Nice wording. I'll add it. Also, we have the terrifying Packhaken to add, if we can figure out the English name. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 02:55, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks. The two German articles are redundant. de:Handhaken (hand hook) and de:Packhaken (packing/loading hook) are very much the same, just the names and their usage are a bit different. "Handhaken" is the more general term, which is why I used that article for interwiki links.
- Explanation: "Handhaken" is the term for hooks commonly used by dockworkers (cf. different shapes), but also for smaller hooks in gardening/landscaping (to lift bags of bulbs, "baled" plants or so), and for longer hooks used by construction workers to move manhole covers, while "Packhaken" (as well as "Hebehaken", "Forsthaken") is the term commonly used in forestry (mainly used to lift/move firewood). In agriculture these hooks are also used and terms like "Heuhaken" (hay hook) or "Ballenhaken" (bale hook) exist, but more often they are simply called "Haken" (hook). Btw, even butchers make used of such hooks … and I guess there are many more applications ;-) --:bdk: 15:03, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
- Nice wording. I'll add it. Also, we have the terrifying Packhaken to add, if we can figure out the English name. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 02:55, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
- I'm going to have bad dreams.
- Okay, I added forest hook and gardening hook. Now the images are squished. Maybe if I add more text it will be okay. Also, the copy I added is pretty rough. Please feel free to modify it. Thanks. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 15:55, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
Bale hook image
[edit]Not sure the background does it justice. Any chance of putting them on something white? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 00:43, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
