Irving Berlin's intention?

[edit]

Is there any record of how Berlin viewed the song, stereotypically, or as a satire of stereotyping? In 1973 in Auckland, New Zealand, at a Mercury Theatre production, Miss Lee Grant sang it, apparently successfully, in a clear satire of the casual racism it portrays.
