Title[edit]

Anybody know why the title "I was Kaiser Bills Batman"? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.80.157.64 (talk) 17:57, 12 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The original with lyrics was by German 1950s band Die Travelers under the title, "Ich war der Putzer vom Kaiser" ("I was the Kaiser's bathman", with an h! with the singer pretending he used to bath and serve the emperor): [1]. It seems the h was dropped accidentally upon the release of the British cover version. -- 2003:71:4E3F:3379:79D7:6279:95A6:3AA3 (talk) 01:36, 10 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I suspect the above comment may be a deliberate hoax - but, for the avoidance of any doubt, the German version by Die Travellers was released in 1969, two years after the original instrumental version - [2], [3]. "Putzer" is the German equivalent of batman, the military position - nothing to do with bathing. Ghmyrtle (talk) 08:42, 10 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I believe that the song recorded by The New Vaudeville band entitled "I was Lord Kitchener's Valet" was a deliberate tongue-in-cheek reference to this song, although it had equally tongue-in-cheek lyrics. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.49.236.153 (talk) 14:13, 28 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Re-write[edit]

What does "This was credited to Whistling Jack Smith provided as a session musician by Mike Sammes of the Mike Sammes Singers" mean?Royalcourtier (talk) 03:39, 22 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Now rewritten and (I hope) clarified. Ghmyrtle (talk) 14:49, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Pennsylvania Polka[edit]

A reliable source informs me that the tune is actually Yank Yankovic's Pennsylvania Polka - 1942.
