Casino near Gettysburg
[edit]"There is current debate about the proposed construction of a casino less than two miles outside of Gettysburg near the intersection of U.S. Route 15 and U.S. Route 30 in Straban Township, Pennsylvania. Legislation enacted in 2005 known as "Act 71" would permit up to 60,000 slot machines to be located in casinos throughout the state in an effort to offset high property taxes. One of two available casino licenses is being pursued by Chance Enterprises Inc. and Millennium Management Group for their proposed "Crossroads Gaming Resort & Spa". Many of Gettysburg's residents and tourists believe that a casino near Gettysburg and the resulting increase in traffic would have a negative impact on Gettysburg's hallowed ground. A group called "No Casino Gettysburg," made up of local citizens as well as students and faculty of Gettysburg College, has been formed to lobby against the proposal."
re the above
Note, Act 71 was passed in 2004. The two licenses are for free standing casinos outside of Philadelphia (where two licenses will be granted) and Pittsburgh (where one license will be granted). Other casino licenses will be granted to developers who will construct them at the race tracks around the state. In all, 14 casino licenses are scheduled for release starting later this year.
There is a rapidly growing movement in the General Assembly to repeal Act 71. There are also several court challenges that could result in the Act being declared unconstitutional. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pa79th (talk • contribs) 13:32, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
No link with Paul Getty
[edit]The late tycoon J.Paul Getty claimed in his memoirs that Gettysburg was named after his family. Site visitors may like to be reassured that there is no truth in this claim.(86.132.157.49 (talk) 15:01, 9 May 2010 (UTC))

[edit]Is this the Gettysburg where there was a decisive battle in your civil war or was that somewhere else? 194.74.62.195 (talk) 16:35, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
Yes, this was the battle site. This page needs to show much more on the battle, it literally mentions the battle twice despite its significance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MeanMotherJr (talk • contribs) 05:04, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
Eponym: James Gettys
[edit]What’s with the link to James Gettys? The link goes to Jim Gettys, ”an American computer programmer at Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs”. Gettysburg wasn’t named after him of course, yet when I removed that link my edit was reverted — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.251.143.198 (talk) 12:01, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

Shoe factory?
[edit]Supposedly the battle was sparked-off when the Confederate General Harry Heth collided with Union troops while he was trying to find a nearby shoe-factory, from which to equip Lee's barefoot army, but historians have doubted this. Do we know whether there was a shoe-factory in or near Gettysburg at that time? Valetude (talk) 23:08, 1 October 2013 (UTC)
