The institute for Management Information Systems is a reseach institution of the Department of Information systems and Operations, at the Vienna University of economics and business, the largest University focusing on business and economics in Europe. The Business information systems master, which is provided by the Institute is ranked 4th in Western Europe by The Eduniversal Best Masters Ranking[1]. History

The institute was originally founded by Prof. Hans Robert Hansen in 1978 who chaired it for over 30 years. Since its founding the development of industry oriented reference models for electronic commerce was a reseach and teaching emphasis. At present, the research activities concentrate on business models, IS architectures, and tools for internet-based consumer information systems (B2C).[3]

Academics

[edit]

The Management Information systems curiculum combines current Information technology topics with a strong economical foundation. This is reflected in the integration of concepts such as ‘Internet of Things’, ‘Ubiquitous Commerce’ and the ‘Web 2.0’ but also the provision of hands-on experience with business programming courses and IT consulting seminars in cooperation with industry partners.

Besides traditional business computing systems, the institute focus on any kind of client system, including mobile and embedded systems (Radio Frequency Identification, Sensor Networks, cell phones). Research in these areas focuses on understanding IT users’ behavior and expectations in their diverse roles as consumers, citizens, community members or employees. Hence, one of the reseach missions of the institute is the analyse of the ambigous interaction between society and machine. Consequences for IT system design are then deducted based on this user understanding.
