Suggestions for edit: Relations with France and Russia: The nuclear facility, destroyed by Israel, was a French (insert photo of Chirac and Saddam) project in the oil rich country. Major weapons imports to Iraq came from France and Russia, especially during the Iran-Iraq conflict. Statistics concerning weapons trade can be found at: http://projects.sipri.se/armstrade/IRQ_IMPRTS_73-02.pdf. Also important: Russian (agreement signed in 1997 with Lukoil), French (TotalFinaElf) and Chinese oil companies made multi-billion dollar drilling deals with Saddam Hussein. The Second Gulf War was not supported by these countries for fear of their contracts with the dictator being annulled by a democratically elected Iraqi government.

This article needs some work, most of all an intro lead and some description on how the diplomacy of iraq has evolved overall since independence. Another issue, under Baath relations to other arab states were not considered as 'foreign' (i think the term 'foreign and arab relations' would have been used). could that be referenced, and did it change after the US invasion? --Soman (talk) 06:03, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
