article needs major work[edit]

There are no references and it reads like brochure from the University. I am going to start by inlcuding a quotation from a UK journalist. Its only an attempt to get some editing going but it is a very early attempt to introduce some neutrality in the article by including some criticism.

I agree, it could use a lot. As for it being written like a brochure, look no further than myself. I will admit that it's style is rather informal, though in my defense this is the first article on an academic institution I have worked on. It was a stub before so it is a little more substantial now. As for criticism, I think what you posted is very relevant; however, I think it would fit better in it's own section rather than the introductory paragraph. While criticism of public notability is essential to any article and should be recorded, putting it at the beginning could swing things in the other direction rather than pulling the article back to the center (more neutral, I mean). Let me know what you think. MezzoMezzo 23:41, 2 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

multiple issues[edit]

I'm adding a multiple issues tag, and replacing the current tag for citations, which is the incorrect one for the state of this article. Below is a summary of the issues.

1. Advertisement/peacock: This article essentially reads like a brochure for this school, and as such is non-encyclopedic. The biggest example is the sentence "The university is culturally diverse and boasts almost all nationalities from across the globe. What makes the university so attractive towards the students accros [sic] the globe is..." It concludes with links for admissions (more on this below).

2. References/citations/original research: There are absolutely no references, and it doesn't appear that there ever have been. There are three external links which all lead to websites run by the school, and thus there are no independent sources. The link to the main website is a good one to have, but the page is in Arabic. Is there an English version of it? As the article is in English, so too should be external links. The other two links are for application forms, which contributes to the advertisement/pamphlet style mentioned above. Links to apply do not belong on an encyclopedic article, and presumably anyone wishing to apply should be able to find their way through the main website to do so. I am removing these two.

We can all assume good faith, especially because this appears to be a response to everyone on the talk page looking to apply (which accounts for the majority of the talk page, and is not at all what the talk page is for).

3. Neutrality/balance/worldwide view/repetition: There are no sections for criticism or controversy. This is important to present a non-biased, objective article. The very study programs themselves (Sharia, Qur'an, Hadith, etc.) are controversial in many places in the world, which at the very least should be mentioned. The only study programs listed, with the exception of the Arabic language, deal exclusively with the study of Islam. As such, the wider academic community may very well not see this as a true "university" if it does not contain subjects such as math, science; or history and literature not related to Islam; etc.

There are also phrases such as "international students from all over the world" and "culturally diverse and boasts almost all nationalities from across the globe" and "attractive towards the students accros the globe." These three phrases are all contained within the three sentences of the History section, which is significantly repetitive. Furthermore, they appear to be misleading regarding the diversity of the school. As non-Muslims are not allowed in Medina, then logically every student at this school is Muslim. I'm also not sure if that qualifies it as "public" though I could be wrong.

Again, I certainly assume good faith, and these tags should not be seen as a badge of shame. The subject obviously qualifies as notable and therefore should not be considered for deletion, but this article needs significant improvement to be brought up to wikipedia standards.
