Link to one arm bandit crime
[edit]Is there any better reference than the one given for this supposed link?
One newspaper article is probably lifted from the other, and who knows where the first link came from? could be nothing more than a rumour. The book is very definitely in and around the N Lincs area, although as the author lived there it isn't surprising. Other than a passing connection to gaming machines, there's no obvious similarities. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.8.124.250 (talk) 18:54, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
Agreed. What the newspaper stories show is a lazy retrospective tagging of the event to the book/film (the film particularly). There is no evidence that the writer is is well placed to make this connection. Any gangsterish activity in the 60s/70s in the North East could be labelled with "Get Carter style" nearly 40 years after the date. Just as any East End villian from the 80s could be called "Long Good Friday" mobster. Meaningless.
What we need to substantiate this - especially with such a promininat mention in the opening of the article - is contemporaneaes references from Lewis, his publishers, or a well placed critic. As it stands, it could be included in a different form in the trivia section - along the lines of "today the story is linked with certain real life events..."
As it is, it is unacceptable and I've removed it. Daisyabigael (talk) 22:51, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
