Ranks

[edit]

The awards in the table are not really sorted after relevance and the most important awards as listed in the main text body were not added. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Demus Wiesbaden (talkcontribs) 17:54, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"paratrooper"

[edit]

The article says he was a "paratrooper" and that is true in the sense that he (like me) was in an airborne unit in Vietnam. But there was only one paratroop assault in that war and that was by the 173rd I believe; they began using chopper inserts instead. So somebody could edit that part for clarity. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.152.216.213 (talk) 15:39, 22 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Need article

[edit]

We really need an article here. See [1]. He has been in the news a lot these past few weeks with regards to talk of a "surge" in Iraq. --64.230.123.128 23:52, 1 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest it should be titled Jack Keane (U.S. soldier), based on the most common form of his name used (including in the link cited above) and Wikipedia's (and most U.S. style guides') preference for the abbreviation for "United States". Suitable redirects can be created. (I note that there are currently 23 pages that link to John Keane (US soldier) and 1 to Jack Keane (U.S. soldier), but the 23 can be fixed. There are none currently to John Keane (U.S. soldier) or Jack Keane (US soldier).) ~ Jeff Q (talk) 05:56, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. I decided to move this talk page to "Talk:Jack Keane (U.S. soldier)" in preparation for the creation of the article. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 06:04, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Here are some arguably reliable sources from which to derive material on Keane and the "Kagan-Keane doctrine":
Note that I haven't reviewed the neutrality of these sources. Some care will probably be needed to extract factual info while avoiding POV. Also note that Gen. Keane is scheduled to appear on ABC This Week (Sunday, 14 January, at 09:00 EST). I'm going to try to catch it. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 06:33, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
A simpler title may be Jack Keane (general). It's not going to change, as general is the highest rank (although there are different types of general, the term general is sufficient.) I can't create the article as I am an IP editor. Here is another source though: [2]. This article should be tied into the The New Way Forward article (which resolves from Surge (disambiguation).) --70.51.232.12 20:31, 14 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
"Jack Keane (general)" may not be sufficiently unique, as there is already a British general who may go by this name as well. (In fact, "Jack Keane (U.S. soldier)" follows the dab method of that other article, John Keane (British soldier).) ~ Jeff Q (talk) 19:37, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Also, couldn't he be dishourably discharged in which case he would lose his title? (I'm not saying it's likely, just pointing out it can change) Nil Einne 12:31, 17 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Move to "Jack Keane"

[edit]
The following discussion is an archived debate of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the debate was PAGE MOVED per discussion. -GTBacchus(talk) 03:43, 29 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think this article should be moved to simply "Jack Keane". Unfortunately there's already a redirect there, but the move can happen if no one objects. Yaron K. 18:16, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The issue would be whether any of the John Keanes listed in in the article pointed to by the redirect might be well-known as "Jack Keane", or if there is any other well-known "Jack Keane". A quick check of the current Johns shows none with a cited nickname of "Jack", suggesting that they aren't famous for the name, whether or not people called them "Jack". I'd support this move if we can't find any other very prominent Jacks. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 19:39, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Support this move, since there are no other Jack Keanes on Wikipedia. A dab link at the top of the article should be sufficient. PC78 18:44, 23 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"Jack Keane" should redirect to the PC game "Jack Keane", this person is named John, and as such only "John Keane" search should redirect here. Nickname in this case does not warrant priority. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 46.107.158.25 (talk) 23:47, 28 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Keane involvement in AEI paper

[edit]

This article currently says:

Keane and scholar Frederick W. Kagan released a policy paper, entitled "Choosing Victory: A Plan for Success in Iraq"…

I had originally thought this was the case as well, especially after seeing articles mentioning the "Kagan-Keane plan" or "Kagan-Keane doctrine". However, when I read these articles and others that mention both Keane and Kagan, I did not find any specific statement that Keane actually participated in the paper. The AEI paper, in fact, does not include Keane's name. It looks to me like the press may have combined the names because the two men's ideas are very similar, but if we don't have a source that actually backs up the above assertion, it should be removed. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 15:17, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is puzzling, but there certainly are sources that say Keane was a co-author; here's one, for example. Maybe there's some semantic issue here, like he co-authored "the plan" but not the actual words. Yaron K. 04:20, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Keane's role in the Iraq surge strategy

[edit]

Article on Jack Keane's behind-the-scenes role in the surge strategy and the selection of Petraeus to be its new leader [3]. Cla68 (talk) 23:39, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Another article discussing Keane's behind-the-scenes network and political activity: "Obama not bowing to top brass, yet" by Gareth Porter (Feb 4, 2009), http://atimes.com/atimes/Middle_East/KB04Ak02.html. —Preceding unsigned comment added by R33f3rman (talkcontribs) 20:57, 3 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wiped out

[edit]

This article was wiped clean except for the first line. I checked with Firefox and IE and they both showed a basically blank page. Thus, I undid the last change. This returned much content, but I have no idea how full this article was at its height. Please review this article by anyone with skills. This gentelman is a current political figure. A news article prompted my initial search. http://www.ipsnews.net/news.asp?idnews=45640 Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.237.41.0 (talk) 04:59, 3 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Question

[edit]

Forgive me any Wikipedia ignorance, but could this page reference Jack_Keane_(video_game)? 146.169.24.86 (talk) 16:54, 13 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Military career

[edit]

His commands during his career are absent or under-developed. The section pretty much says he once saved the life of General David Patraeus, which is interesting but inadequate coverage for a 35+ year military career. Solipsism 101 (talk) 17:33, 6 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
