Famous Jarrow Residents
[edit]Catherine Cookson
[edit]Is there any reason that Catherine Cookson isn't included? Although she was born in Tyne Dock, her bio says that she lived in Jarrow before moving back to South Shields. I notice that she's listed on the South Shields "Famous Residents" list but there's no reason why she can't be on both if she lived in both places! Chris 20:53, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
Patrick Stewart
[edit]Is there proof for people like Patrick Stewart? You'd think his own Wiki would have mentioned it.
- Whether or not he ever lived in Jarrow, in the absence of any supporting evidence I can't say I'm convinced he spent the majority of it there. I'd be interested to know which secondary school he went to, for instance.Chris 23:59, 17 June 2006 (UTC)
J.M.W. Turner
[edit]Did J.M.W. Turner actually stay in Jarrow for any significant length of time? It isn't mentioned in his bio, and if he was just staying in the area long enough to complete his painting then perhaps "resident" is a bit of a stretch. I know we're a bit short on famous people but we don't want to let the entries get too contrived! (Well, my opinion, anyway) Chris 20:59, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
Kylie Minogue
[edit]Kylie was born in 1968 according to her wikipedia entry, so that would make her 13 when she did her stint at Topshop in 1981. I think someone's having a laugh here. Did Obama spend his gap year at Jarrow Woolworths? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.135.21.225 (talk) 17:21, 14 February 2009 (UTC)
Adding some new sections
[edit]The main page could probably be fleshed out a bit more. Looking at entries for other towns, it'd probably benefit from adding things like Education, Leisure/entertainment, Economy (don't tell me it doesn't have any of these things! :), Politics, Climate etc etc. Anybody want to volunteer to make a stab at it? If not, I might have a go myself, but since I haven't lived there for 20-odd years I'm not exactly up to date with current developments... Chris 14:46, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
History and Naming
[edit]I've added the History and Naming¹ section and moved the bulk of the original text there. I think this looks better, but more importantly it bumps the contents box up to the top of the page. Hope everyone is okay with this.
- ¹ I've been using the Bishop's Stortford page as a template, just in case anyone was wondering! IMHO it was a good starting point from which to model an extended Jarrow entry.
Chris 18:18, 18 June 2006 (UTC) The Original name of Jarrow was "GYRWY" which means "marsh or fen". —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.39.177.68 (talk) 01:47, 9 January 2010 (UTC)
Repetition
[edit]It occurs to me that some of the information included in the Jarrow page duplicates that in the more general South Tyneside page, for example the "twin towns" section. Personally I'd rather maintain a comprehensive entry for Jarrow even if it does mean having to keep on top of things to keep the entries in sync rather than just allow it to become subsumed into the South Tyneside entry, which I don't really think would be a good thing. Chris 20:48, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
Removing text
[edit]A paragraph from the main page has been used as a starting point for the new Monkwearmouth-Jarrow Priory entry, which is fair enough I think, but can we not subsequently remove the text from the Jarrow page; it is part of Jarrow's history, after all. I know that the two paragraphs will probably eventually go out of sync, but that doesn't really matter since they're about different areas anyway. Just my thoughts, anyway.

St Bedes secondary modern
[edit]Can anyone go further back in the history of Jarrow other than the Romans ??. or the history of St Bede's secondary modern school, i was told it was a nunery ??.
Pete St Bede's was finally demolished in 1978/9 after over one Hundred years of education. There is a site relating to it and the history of Jarrow. Garabaldina. St.Bedes was closed in 1979.CG.
Spelling in Wilkinson quotation
[edit]Could someone who has access to the book check whether it has "where crowed" or "were crowded"? It seems unlikely that two consecutive spelling errors would actually appear in the text of a serious book. The capitalization also seems questionable. Creator of the Iphone from Jarrow?
[edit]"Martin Catley, creator of the Iphone."
I removed this because it is completely wrong... Kuname (talk) 14:58, 7 April 2011 (UTC)
Nickname
[edit]The claim that today Jarrow residents' popular nickname for Jarrow is "Jarra" seems unlikely. Surely "Jarra" is not a nickname, but just the Geordies' way of pronouncing "Jarrow"? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.131.46.118 (talk) 09:45, 26 September 2011 (UTC)
