The books say that Hansen was a co-founder of the guild which is not the same as founding the exhibitions. Uncle G (talk) 22:22, 25 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • First, thanks for creating this article. An excellent addition! I've been meaning to add more articles to the Danish Modern topic.

Are you sure that's correct? I was under the impression that the Snedkerlaugs in Copenhagen is a 400+ year old institution. I don't have the Byars source in hand but there may be a translation error. The exhibitions started in 1927. Ew3234 (talk) 01:14, 26 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    • It is what the books say. I suspect that the two guilds are not connected, and I suspect that the 20th century one was coterminous with the exhibitions, but all that the books give me, and all that I can verifiably write, is that Hansen was a co-founder of the guild. They don't say a co-founder of the exhibitions; they don't go into the details of the guild; and I haven't found anything documenting the guild per se. For all I know it could have been founded well before they came up with the idea of exhibitions. Uncle G (talk) 07:48, 26 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
      • Thanks for the follow up, User:Uncle G. I found another source that lists Hansen as the founder of the Guild exhibition: https://archive.org/details/contemporaryclas0000gand_x5x0/page/113/mode/2up. This seems more aligned with the timeline of the Copenhagen Cabinetmaker's Guild (400+ years old). However, they list the exhibitions starting in 1926 - instead of 1927. Unfortunately, both sources are tertiary so errors are more prone. I imagine that a solid secondary source is readily available in Danish but hard to come by in English. I can take a second look later.

I don't think there were two exhibitions or guilds active in Copenhagen at the same time. I checked "Networks, Narratives, and New Markets: The Rise and Decline of Danish Modern Furniture Design, 1930-1970" and didn't see anything suggesting two organizations. • I do not think that there were two organizations simultaneously. I suspect that the 16th century one died out, long before. But that doesn't mean that the people who founded the 20th century one were the same people who then went on to be perennial exhibitors in its exhibitions, or that the founding of the 20th century guild was the same as the founding of its exhibitions, or that the exhibitions were all that the guild did. I'd like to be able to prove, or indeed disprove, my suspicion that effectively the two are coterminous; with a good source. I cannot honestly write Wikipedia content saying anything other than the aforementioned limited statement, asserting that to be historical fact rather than my personal suspicions. Yes, I have the same concerns about English language sources. Uncle G (talk) 07:20, 28 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
