Compliance with ICZN

[edit]

Unfortunately, the 2020 paper by Dmitriev acted - in this case - in violation of ICZN Article 23.9.5, which states: "When an author discovers that a species-group name in use is a junior primary homonym [Art. 53.3] of another species-group name also in use, but the names apply to taxa not considered congeneric after 1899, the author must not automatically replace the junior homonym; the case should be referred to the Commission for a ruling under the plenary power and meanwhile prevailing usage of both names is to be maintained [Art. 82]."
Note in particular the phrase "meanwhile prevailing usage of both names is to be maintained". Dmitriev replaced the junior homonym on his own initiative and did not submit an application to the Commission for a ruling; under the Code, the name Kalidasa lanata is still valid and available until and unless the Commission issues a ruling to suppress it. However, restoring this WP page to the correct name would probably constitute "original research". This is a serious problem, because readers who come to this article will incorrectly assume that the name has been changed to albiflos when in fact it has not. I was not aware of this. Thanks for the information. Shyamal (talk) 01:41, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have moved this, but please note that it is a lot of work moving the files under the renamed category on Commons etc. I hope someone works on resolving such problems actively in the formal literature. Shyamal (talk) 13:50, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
